about

Arrivare sulla sabbia.... Richiamo del mare

From the earth, to the glisten of frost, to the infinite depth, pull and power of the ocean, with ONDA Drum & Lace stretches deeper into dance floor rhythms and draws inspiration from water and The Birth of Venus—with motifs of shells, sand, sisterhood and Fibonacci spirals which present themselves throughout the album.

ONDA is the most confident Drum & Lace work to date. Across ten tracks, the album displays the artist's astute ability to conjure mesmerising and cinematic soundscapes through deftly layered textures, shimmering vocal pads and thoughtful collaborations. Each track takes the listener to a different plane, from the ocean floor to the waves lapping gently at your feet, ONDA is a journey which tugs at your heart and makes your body feel weightless.

ONDA, track by track

From the hypnotic dance-floor opener and lead single "Solstice," the second track is one of two collaborations with the saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi. If "Solstice" invites the listener to come on a journey, "Plus" is a call to move forward with confidence, the layers of sound enveloping you in a warm sense of security. As Drum & Lace says, "Plus" is a shedding of the skin. The first of a series of what the artist calls "ambient connectors" follows, the delicate and vulnerable melody of "A Piedi Nudi." In Italian this means "bare feet," which shines through in the tracks' grounded beauty and simplicity. Next, as "Nymph" calls us to the dance floor, the propulsive beat and powerful tones create the sense of losing yourself under flashing white lights, feeling strong female energy around you as you dance.

The majesty of the ocean shines through track five, "Conchiglie," which means "shells" in Italian. Crisp textures are accompanied by warm, deep synths, resulting in a triumphant and uplifting track which feels like something of a mantra as you arrive at the album's halfway point. "Plucked," with harpist Nailah Hunter, takes us deep underwater. Combining muffled notes, twinkling textures and the weight of the low-end, "Plucked" feels like a deep inhalation, or floating in the water as you surrender to the tide, wondering where it will take you. That weightlessness continues on "Whalesong" featuring violinist Violeta Vicci, which swaddles you in swirling textures and recalls, as the name suggests, the call and response of whales communicating with each other, their echoes travelling miles through the water.

One of the album's key themes and a tribute to Drum & Lace's "coven" of women arrives next. "Sisters," with its bright arpeggiations and low, almost growling synths, evokes the idea that friendships between women are like a dance which must move through the chapters of life as they present themselves—sometimes dark, sometimes light, always together. In ONDA's latter stages we hear Drum & Lace's trip-hop influence, garnered from years listening to artists like Zero 7 and Morcheeba. "Huntington," which features vibraphonist Max Gaertner and is named after the LA garden where Drum & Lace gathered sounds to perform a live improvisation, feels confident and settled, with chiming, colourful notes, relaxed rhythms and a spacious feel to the bass.

And finally we arrive at "Richiamo Del Mare," which means "return to the sea." The second Shiroishi collaboration is another deep inhalation, the vocal pads, synth textures and gorgeous saxophone coming together in a swirling, inviting soundscape that evokes the feeling of singing out to sea, your voice carried by the strong coastal breeze. It feels like looking out across the ocean to the horizon, birds flying by as silhouettes in the setting sun, not feeling certain what lies ahead but having the confidence to embrace whatever life has in store for you.

On ONDA, Drum & Lace takes the strength of the ocean into her own hands and delivers a powerful but exquisite work. Which element of the natural world will she seize next?
